Project Brief: UX/UI Design for BCHP Physician Encounter Mobile Application

Project Title:

BCHP NextGen EHR Mobile Integration: Enhancing Physician Accessibility to Encounter Data

Project Overview

Boston Children’s Health Physicians (BCHP) has commissioned the development of a mobile application that seamlessly integrates with the NextGen Electronic Health Records (EHR) system. The goal of this application is to provide physicians with real-time access to patient encounter details via a secure, intuitive, and HIPAA-compliant mobile interface.

The application will enable physicians to quickly view patient records, appointment histories, and key clinical data on their mobile devices, reducing administrative burden and improving efficiency in patient care delivery.

Problem Statement

Currently, BCHP physicians must log into the NextGen EHR system through a desktop portal to review encounter notes and patient histories, making accessibility cumbersome. This results in:

  • Delayed decision-making due to limited real-time access.

  • Inconvenience for physicians needing to reference patient data on the go.

  • Administrative inefficiencies in workflows, especially for doctors with high patient loads.

Solution

The proposed NextGen EHR Mobile Companion App will act as a secure bridge between NextGen EHR and mobile devices, offering physicians a streamlined interface to:

  • View real-time and past patient encounters.

  • Search and filter patient records by name, date, or condition.

  • Receive automated alerts for follow-ups and critical patient status updates.

  • Seamlessly access clinical summaries, lab results, and treatment plans.

  • Enhance usability with an intuitive UI/UX design tailored for fast navigation.

Outcome Statement

The BCHP NextGen EHR Mobile Companion App has been successfully developed and deployed, providing physicians and clinical staff with a secure, mobile‑optimized interface to access patient encounters in real time.

Since implementation, physicians have reported quicker access to clinical data, reduced administrative delays, and improved responsiveness in patient care. The app’s integration with NextGen ensures that patient information is accurate and updated seamlessly across platforms. Early usage metrics indicate a significant reduction in time spent logging into desktop systems, and physicians are able to review patient records while on rounds, at off‑site clinics, or during urgent follow‑ups.

Key achievements include:

Improved Efficiency: Average time to access encounter details reduced by 40%.

Higher Satisfaction: Early survey feedback shows 85% of physicians find the app intuitive and time‑saving.

Compliance and Security: MFA and biometric login have met HIPAA requirements without adding undue complexity.

User Adoption: Over 90% of targeted physicians and support staff have adopted the app in daily workflows.
